A Chinese orthopedic surgeon, Luo Shanpeng’s photo went viral after he was pictured asleep on an operating table while performing surgery.

The surgeon who is being hailed a hero after he performed surgery for 20 hours non-stop laid his head on the operating table for a brief rest while still holding the arm of the patient he was working upon but slept off.

A nurse who took the photo and posted on WeChat, wrote:

Seeing this makes my heart ache.

Luo told Guiyang Evening News that he had already performed five operations when a patient whose right arm had been mangled in a meat mincer and nearly torn off from his body was rushed into the hospital at around 6pm on January 3.

He said he had to sacrifice more time even though he had worked overtime to save the patient from losing his arm.

Luo said that it was a great honour to become a surgeon and his happiest moments are when he sees his patients recovering.

While reacting to the photo, Luo wrote:

‘I wanted to shut my eyes and have a rest. I didn’t expect to fall asleep.’
